Pick the main visit first
For a first history-focused visit, start with the castle. For a family with different interests, Camera Obscura can become the main paid activity. Choose based on your group rather than feeling obliged to buy every famous attraction.
Keep the middle of the day flexible
Leave time for lunch and an Old Town walk. The Royal Mile has slopes, cobbles and plenty of reasons to stop. A guided themed walk can replace your independent exploration, but check whether it repeats a route you have already planned.
Add one afternoon or evening option
A whisky experience, palace visit or underground tour can complete the day if the timing and location work. Treat these as alternatives. Check the final start time and allow a real buffer after your main attraction.
Save distant outings for a longer stay
The zoo, Leith and Highland day trips each deserve more space than a rushed final hour. If one of them is your main reason for visiting, build the day around it and reduce the Old Town plan. Leave sufficient time to reach your departing train or flight.
